Practically all of the musicians in my company-owned and produced bands were influenced in some way by Prince and his artistry. He was a master songwriter, singer, guitarist, bass player, drummer, keyboardist, producer, arranger and practically no one could rival is energizing stage presence. What astounds me the most was how prolific he was with songwriting as well as his enormous level of passion about his art to the very end of his life at almost fifty-eight years old. There are artists who continue to create new works into old age however I don’t know of many who did it at the level of output of Prince. He truly seemed ageless.
All my acts, including my string groups, regularly perform at least one Prince song at every wedding. And obviously, the timing is real hot right now. Some of the staples you may want to consider are Kiss, Let’s Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, 1999 and of course Purple Rain. One of my acts, SoundConnection, takes the Ed Sheeran huge romantic hit ballad, Thinking Out Loud, and medleys it into Prince’s Most Beautiful Girl In The World. Just last night, at a beautiful wedding on the water, when the band went into The Most Beautiful Girl In The World the crowd got into a big circle on their own while the bride and groom danced lovingly in the middle. I feel very fortunate to have been able to see Prince six times. The first time was actually THE legendary Purple Rain tour. Yes, it was everything you could possibly imagine! I was blown away by the energy and how he gave every fiber of his being to entertain us and honor the musical muse. What some people don’t know is that as brilliant as he was at performing a concert, he was just as brilliant at interacting with the massive crowds and making us feel like we were all there together and enjoying ourselves as much as Prince. The ability to interact and bond everyone together, even if they don’t all know each other, is a skill that takes years to hone. We’re talking about your band or DJ creating an atmosphere and taking everyone in the room on a sort of journey. When you research entertainment keep this important element in mind. The night is all about celebrating the two of you, with your families and friends, and facilitating participating and enjoying a great experience together.
